The YMCA is part of a global vibrant organisation that operates in 119 countries around the world, and each year, in celebration of our international birthday, every YMCA in the world takes part in one challenge to tell the YMCA story to thousands of communities around the world, at the same time. The events will all be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017.
This year's theme is "Empowering young people through basketball” in recognition of the YMCA's 125th Anniversary of the invention of basketball.
Basketball was invented at a YMCA college in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891, by Canadian physical education instructor, James Naismith. He started the game with peach baskets suspended on poles, a soccer ball and 13 rules. Every time a basket was shot, someone had to go up on a ladder to get the ball out… it didn’t take long until the basket nets were cut through to allow the ball to drop through itself. Basketball was then spread through US colleges by the YMCA, and the NBA continues today with college playoffs, and of course basketball is now a global sport!
The YMCA World Challenge events being planned are taking many different shapes – so contact your local YMCA for more details.
