For the health and safety of our staff and the whole community in line with the latest Australian Government advice, all YMCA recreation services right across Australia including gyms, swimming lessons and gymnastics programs have shut down temporarily as of midday today (Monday 23rd March) until further notice.
We are adapting and responding to the evolving situation caused by the Coronavirus pandemic to provide support and care for everyone in our community as best we can.
Our number one priority remains the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff, customers and the entire community.
We continue to monitor the evolving and unprecedented situation closely and are basing all our decisions and actions on the advice of the Australian Government’s advice in regards to health and workplace matters.
Other Y programs still considered essential are operating including some youth services, child care services, outside school hours care programs and some upcoming school holiday programs, particularly to support essential service workers, all with safe distancing and hygiene procedures in place. YMCA vocational schools in Brisbane also remain open at this stage.
The Y is also in negotiations with various State Governments to continue to provide essential child care services and outside school hour programs and vacation care programs to ensure any parents working in essential services can still get to work.
We will work towards re-opening our closed facilities and programs when the health advice is that it’s safe to do so.
Support for our members
In most Ys, memberships for swimming lessons and health clubs, etc, will automatically be placed on suspension during the period of closure and members not charged. Please check with your local Y on any specific conditions.
We are also working on ways to keep our members connected and active throughout any extended shut-down. In the meantime, try some of the online workouts that our Y colleagues in Canada have created, for everyone from kids to older adults.

We will have an online innovation of our own to introduce later this week.
Support for our people
Please be mindful and compassionate that our own workforce is being heavily impacted by the shutdown of recreational centres and programs which commenced in Victoria last week.
Where possible, we have been directing re-rostered staff to other casual employment opportunities including those available through national supermarket chains, and financial support initiatives as they are released including the ability to access $10,000 of superannuation this financial year and next financial year. Staff and volunteers also have access to an Employee Assistance Program.
The YMCA also continues to lobby government for additional support, to ensure that that Y can recover and rebuild, when the time comes, to continue to serve Australia.
About the Y
The Y is a not for profit organisation with over 170 years’ history, serving more than 600 communities around Australia, delivering a broad range of largely fee-for-service programs in industries including child care, schools and school-based programs, recreation, accommodation and youth.
