Vale Bob Romanes, OAM

November 22, 2021 The Y in Australia

We are very sad to learn that last week (18/11) Y Australia has lost another of its treasured Life Governors, Robert “Bob” Romanes OAM.

Bob was National Executive Director of the National Council of the YMCAs of Australia for 13 years, and was a mentor and friend to many across the Y and the broader recreation industry.

A former teacher and taxi driver before he started his YMCA career as a training officer, he worked his way up to National CEO, over his 23 year career with the Y.

He was a innovator and pathfinder, creating a sport and recreation traineeship program for the Federal Government, for which he was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM).

He was also Chair of both Sport and Recreation Training Australia and the Recreation Industry Council of Australia.

In 2015, Bob was honored with an award for his lifetime contribution to the Recreation industry by Aquatics and Recreation Victoria (ARV).

Since his retirement from YMCA Australia, Bob took pride in his connection to the Y as a Life Governor, and worked as an adviser and consultant to the recreation sector.

Tragically, Bob lost his son Greg Romanes, last year to a fall. He is survived by his wife Pam and daughter Jenny, plus four grandchildren and three stepchildren.

The Funeral Service for Bob Romanes will be Webcast live on Friday 3rd December, 2021 commencing at 2.00pm. Details are provided here.
