Last month, the Y Australia provided a submission into the recent inquiry into civics education, engagement, and participation in Australia.

Our submission highlighted young people’s growing distrust and disillusionment with formal civic process and the need for government to shape policy with young people and invest in opportunities for young people to build skills and knowledge and access trusted, reliable information.

Specifically, the Y calls for investment in community-based civic education programs, including a National Youth Parliament, media literacy training, youth-led media, and opportunities for young people to meaningfully work alongside government.

Our submission also calls on policy makers and leaders to recognise and respond to young people’s preferred, ‘informal’ methods of civic participation.
