Vale Bruce Peake, OAM

It is with great sadness that we write this post about the passing of Bruce Peake, OAM at the age of 85.

  • 2003 Hall of Fame Inductee – YMCA Geelong
  • 2003 Recipient of the Rosalie Battaglia Volunteer Award – YMCA Victoria
  • 1997-2000 President, YMCA Australia and Member Executive Committee of Asia Pacific Alliance of YMCAs.
  • 2022 – Awarded an OAM for service to the community, particularly youth through his work at the Y.

Bruce was first with Y Geelong as a coach in the South Barwon Little League Football Program. Later he was an administrator of the Football clinics within the program. He also played 25 senior games for the Geelong Cats across four seasons (1958-61) and kicked nine goals.

He was a dedicated member of the Board of Directors from the mid 1970’s and served as President. While a Board member he represented Y Geelong as a state and national delegate within the Y Movement.

Bruce shared his passion for sport and community with the Y, he organised the Annual appeal for several years and supported athletes in the Corporate Cup program attended presentative and events and provided much need volunteer support for the refurbishment of the Newtown Stadium.

Bruce has also been a strong advocate for the Y and its community service in discussions with National, State and Local government.

In 1994 Bruce was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Councils of YMCAs of Australia and was President from 1997-2000. He was an Australian delegate to the 14th World Council of YMCA’s in 1998 and a member of the Executive Committee of the Asia-Pacific Alliance of YMCAs from 1997 to 2000.

He retired from the National Board in 2002.

In 2022, Bruce was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia – for service to the community, particularly youth through his work at the Y.

We send Bruce’s family and friends our condolences and honour the contribution Bruce made to our local communities in Geelong, cross Australia, Asia-Pacific Region and the world.
